HELLION CLOTHING

TEE DESIGN

The Hellion tee draws upon classic punk rock imagery of the 70s and 80s and references the collage aesthetic used in many early punk flyers. It simultaneously evokes images of vandalized city walls and street flyers that can be found layered on walls and telephone poles in urban environments. While the front of the tee features an eroded yet elegant serif typeface that showcases the company’s name, the design on the back of the shirt is the main focal point of the piece. It features a collage comprised of different original posters and flyers stapled onto a wood board.

The process utilized traditional and digital media, and it began by creating a variety of flyers that fit with the rough street and punk aesthetic of the brand. The designs were printed then stapled to a wooden board, after which they were wrinkled, worn, ripped, and splattered with paint or graffiti to varying degrees. After a few days of being left outside to weather the elements, the collage was photographed and imported into Adobe Photoshop. The image was then manipulated to create a few different versions, but ultimately, the black and white version was selected as the most powerful, as it visually references the black and white Xerox aesthetic of early punk flyers. A halftone filter was then applied to the image to reduce screen printing costs, while still providing a large amount of details.
