NAEPC
The Native American Environmental Protection Coalition (NAEPC) is a tribally driven organization that is dedicated to providing technical assistance, environmental education, professional training, information networking, and inter-tribal coordination. The organization’s goal is to become a recognized leader for environmental stewardship through creating and promoting resilient partnerships while embracing tribal culture and traditions for present and future generations. These banners, flyers, apparel, and brochure designs were created to raise awareness about different programs to tribal community members in a way that is clear, informative, and visually engaging.
A unique challenge with these designs was to utilize elements of traditional Native American design and craftsmanship in order to link the organization to the vast indigenous cultural tradition in a way that is respectful, tasteful, and avoids stereotyping. Choices such as the use of triangular shapes, traditional woven basket caps, and earthy colors refer to similar motifs that exist in Native American basketry, textiles, and other cultural productions. Most of the projects incorporate traditional illustrations that have been converted and manipulated through Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to give them a hand-crafted quality that remains true to their tribal influences.
